Read a message with the Morse code decoder
A Morse code decoder turns separated groups of dots and dashes into readable characters. Paste a written sequence into the tool above, then inspect both the result and any review notices. This page focuses on received text: preserving boundaries, finding invalid groups and distinguishing ordinary characters from operational signals. It does not listen to a microphone or analyze an uploaded sound recording.
How to use the Morse code decoder
Begin with a clearly separated example such as ... --- ... and check that the result is SOS. Each group maps to a character; the spaces identify where one group ends and the next begins. The Morse code decoder works as you edit, so there is no separate conversion submission. Keep an untouched copy of an unfamiliar source if you expect to make several corrections, especially when the spacing came from a puzzle or another application.
Read the output before copying it. A recognizable word does not prove every group was valid, and an error elsewhere in a longer message may still need attention. Use the original sequence and the alphabet chart to verify doubtful positions. For a sentence with several words, compare the word boundaries as well as the letters. A missing boundary can change the structure of the message even when the individual character codes are all valid.

Give the Morse code decoder clear boundaries
Use one space between letters and a slash between words for the clearest standard notation. The input also accepts three or more spaces and line breaks as word separators. Compact notation uses a vertical bar between letters. If you are typing an example yourself, stick to one style throughout it. Consistent separators make mistakes easier to spot and make the sequence easier to explain to somebody checking it by hand.
The Morse code decoder accepts supported typographic dot and dash forms, but visual similarity alone does not make every symbol interchangeable. A decorative mark copied from an image may be a different character entirely. If a pasted group is rejected, compare it with plain periods and hyphens. Preserve the original spacing while you replace a suspect mark. Removing every space to make the line look cleaner removes information the decoder needs.
Find an invalid group without losing the source
An invalid token is shown as a reviewable part of the result rather than disappearing. This lets you see where the message stopped matching the supported alphabet. Check for an extra dot, a missing dash, accidental punctuation or two letters joined into one group. The Morse code decoder keeps the source editable and does not move your cursor away just because the input needs work. Continue typing normally until you choose to inspect the issue.
Activate Review input for a deliberate jump to a problem, or expand Inspect character mapping to explore the source and result together. Selecting a source range highlights its matching groups, while activating a group selects its original position. Longer inputs are paged in the mapping view. The Morse code decoder uses those source positions to help you make a correction; it does not invent a replacement word when you select a highlighted group.
Choose text or operational meaning
Some Morse patterns have more than one meaning depending on their alphabet. For example, .-.-. can represent the plus sign in ordinary text or the operational signal AR. The pattern alone does not settle which one the sender intended. The Morse code decoder therefore separates text characters from operational signals, and it can show a comparison when the available meanings require a choice. Context belongs in that decision, not in an invisible guess.
Select the text interpretation when you are reading ordinary letters and punctuation. Choose operational signals when the source is a procedural exchange using those meanings. Review the offered interpretations before confirming one, especially if a puzzle has mixed conventional notation with its own rules. A confirmed choice tells the Morse code decoder which meaning you intend to use. It does not establish that an unknown sender used that same convention or that the surrounding message is authentic.
Why the Morse code decoder does not guess missing spaces
Morse characters have different lengths. A continuous sequence can therefore be divided in several valid ways. For instance, .- can be the letter A, while . - is E followed by T. A longer run can create many more possible combinations. A word that looks familiar is not automatically the right answer. This is a limitation of the information supplied, not something that a dictionary can always resolve with certainty.
The current Morse code decoder uses explicit character boundaries and does not offer speculative recovery of an unseparated stream. Ask for a spaced version, inspect the original layout, or use clues supplied by the puzzle author. If you add boundaries yourself, treat the result as your interpretation and compare it against those clues. Keep the original run available so you can revisit the decision. Do not mistake a smooth sentence for evidence that the segmentation is uniquely correct.
Check a result before using it elsewhere
For a straightforward text message, a useful cross-check is to encode the decoded characters again and compare the character groups with the original. Compare normalized symbols and boundaries, not the exact typography of a copied dash. Letter case is not preserved by the code itself. This check can expose a transcription mistake, but it cannot resolve an ambiguous operational meaning or prove that the source had the intended word boundaries.
When you are satisfied, copy the text from the Morse code decoder and inspect the pasted version in its destination. If copying is blocked by browser permissions, use the selectable fallback. A share link provides another way to open the same source and supported settings, but the recipient still gets an explicit import step. Treat the link as readable message content, not a secret token, and explain any boundary choices you made when passing the result along.
Use the Morse code decoder as a checking partner
Try a short practice sequence before looking at its answer. Write down the character you associate with each group, then compare your work with the tool. When a letter is wrong, inspect just that pattern on the alphabet chart and try it again inside a new word. Using the Morse code decoder this way keeps the exercise active: you make an interpretation first, then use the result to identify exactly what needs another look.
Separate visual reading from listening practice. Written dots and dashes show boundaries explicitly; an audio exercise requires you to recognize timing as well. The generator can create a checked recording for that purpose, but this page does not automatically transcribe the recording back into text. Keep exercises within the alphabet and conventions you are learning. For a classroom puzzle, include a notation key so that an accidental formatting choice does not become an unintended part of the challenge.
Common questions
Can the Morse code decoder read an audio file?
No. This beta accepts written dots, dashes and separators, not a WAV upload, microphone stream or sound recording. If you have an audio source, it first needs a separate transcription process. The ability to generate or play Morse audio elsewhere on this site does not mean that automatic audio decoding is available here.
Why does the Morse code decoder show brackets?
Brackets identify a group or character that needs review instead of hiding it. Check that position in the original input for unsupported marks, missing separators or an invalid pattern. Do not simply delete the brackets from the copied result; resolve the source issue and confirm that the revised message still says what you intend.
Does the Morse code decoder translate into English?
It decodes supported character patterns; it does not translate meaning from one language into another. A decoded message may still contain abbreviations, names or words you do not understand. The text alphabet is limited to the characters shown on the chart, and decoding does not restore the capitalization of the original writing.
Is my input saved by the Morse code decoder?
The page keeps its draft in this tab's memory, not in a saved account. Refreshing or clearing local data removes it. Conversion stays local; optional masked analytics requires your consent in privacy settings. A copied result, downloaded file or link you send to another application is outside that local clearing process, so keep sensitive information out of shared examples.
