Make a recording with the Morse code generator

A Morse code generator turns a written message into a timed sound pattern. Start with the text field above, listen to a short preview, and adjust the settings before exporting. This guide explains what the controls change, how to choose useful practice settings, and what to check in a downloaded file. Everything described here uses the existing browser tools; no microphone recording or audio recognition is involved.

Start with a short, checked message

Enter a word or sentence in the text alphabet, then check the written Morse before listening. A short phrase makes it easier to notice a missing letter or unexpected punctuation mark. The Morse code generator keeps unsupported characters visible and asks you to review them, rather than quietly dropping them from the recording. Resolve those items before expecting a complete playable message. Your input stays editable throughout the process.

Use Listen for the first preview, pause when you want to inspect the current character, and use Replay to begin again. The character display helps connect the sound with the sequence being played. Changing the message or sound settings invalidates the old playback, so check the new preview before exporting. A Morse code generator is most useful when the sound, visible output and file all describe the same version of your message.

Set the Morse code generator speed

Speed is measured in words per minute, or WPM. The standard reference word PARIS represents 50 timing units including its following word gap; it is a calibration convention, not a prediction of how many arbitrary words you will recognize. At 20 WPM, one dot unit is 60 milliseconds. A standard dash lasts three units. Longer messages and characters with more elements naturally take more time to play.

In standard timing, the gap inside a character is one dot unit, the gap between characters is three units, and the gap between words is seven units. The Morse code generator calculates these relationships from the speed setting. Raising WPM shortens the entire standard rhythm. Start with a speed at which you can distinguish the sounds, then adjust gradually. Finishing a fast recording is less useful than being able to identify what you actually heard.

Compare standard, Farnsworth and custom spacing

Standard spacing keeps the usual timing proportions throughout the message. Farnsworth spacing keeps each character at the selected character speed while adding more time between characters and words. Its effective speed is lower than or equal to the character speed. Use the Morse code generator to compare the same phrase in both modes: the character itself remains recognizable while the pauses give you additional time to decide what you heard.

Custom spacing offers separate character-gap and word-gap multipliers. It is useful for an exercise with deliberately longer pauses, but it is not the same setting as Farnsworth effective WPM. These modes are alternatives, not layers to combine. When you change modes in the Morse code generator, preview the complete phrase again and label any saved practice file with the settings you used. That makes later listening comparisons much less confusing.

Find a comfortable tone and level

Tone controls pitch in hertz, while volume controls the generated signal level. The available tone range is 200–1200 Hz, with 600 Hz as the default. Moving the tone control does not turn a dot into a dash or alter the encoded letters. Use the Morse code generator to compare a few pitches at the same speed, choosing a sound you can follow comfortably on the speakers or headphones you are using.

Begin with a modest device volume as well as a modest tool volume. Speaker quality, system settings and headphones all affect what reaches your ears, so a percentage in the page is not a calibrated listening level. Sound starts only after your action. If playback is unavailable, check that the browser permits audio and that the correct output device is selected. Your text remains available while you resolve the playback problem.

Download from the Morse code generator

After checking the preview, choose Download WAV for a local audio file. The Morse code generator exports mono PCM audio at 44.1 kHz with 16-bit samples, not an MP3 or a recording captured from your microphone. Open the downloaded file in an audio player to check its beginning, ending and audible content before using it in a lesson or project. Downloading successfully confirms that a file was created, not that it has been reviewed by a listener.

The current audio limit is 120 seconds. A slower speed or larger gaps can make the same text exceed that limit, so check duration after changing settings. If a message is too long, split it at sensible word boundaries or shorten it yourself. The Morse code generator does not silently cut off the end to fit. Small, clearly named recordings are often easier to reuse than one long file with several unrelated practice sections.

Keep text and operational signals distinct

The text alphabet treats letters and punctuation as written characters. Operational signals, sometimes called prosigns, use joined patterns to communicate procedural meanings. Some have the same pattern as a text character, but their role is different. Switch the Morse code generator to the operational alphabet when that is what your exercise requires, and choose the supported signals from the structured controls instead of assuming that a bracketed name in ordinary text creates a prosign.

Download TXT when you need a written companion to the sound. The file contains the current output; the original source is included only when you select that option. Keep the output style and spacing notation consistent with your worksheet. If a recipient needs an explanation of a symbol, the alphabet chart is a better reference than an unlabeled recording. Check the intended namespace before reusing the sequence in another tool.

Build a repeatable listening exercise

Choose a small set of characters and prepare two short recordings: one with comfortable spacing and another with the same characters in a different order. Listen without looking, write down your answers, and compare them afterward. Use the Morse code generator to change one setting at a time so that you know what made the exercise harder. A slower effective pace with clear character rhythm can be more informative than changing pitch, speed and message together.

A share link is a message snapshot, not the WAV file itself. Supported speed and tone settings travel with the link, while volume stays local and imports use standard timing rather than custom spacing. For an exact listening exercise, send the checked WAV separately through your chosen application. Link creation in the Morse code generator is local, but any platform receiving a link or file can retain it. Do not treat Morse as encryption or the tool as an emergency signaling system.

Common questions

Can this Morse code generator make MP3 files?

The current built-in audio export is WAV. There is no MP3 export control in this beta. Use the WAV directly when your player or editing workflow accepts it. If you convert the file elsewhere, listen to that converted version too; another application controls its encoding settings and can change the final sound.

Why is the Morse code generator not making sound?

First check that the message is ready and that there are no unresolved input items. Then check the tool volume, system output and browser audio permission. Press Listen yourself to start playback. A device or browser limitation should not require deleting the draft, and the written output remains available for inspection.

Does the Morse code generator upload my recording?

Audio generation and WAV creation take place in the browser. The tool does not upload a recording as part of that workflow. Saving or sending the file through another application is a separate action with that application's own handling. Clearing local page data stops the current session but cannot delete a file you already downloaded.

Can I use the Morse code generator offline?

The already loaded tool can perform its local conversion and export work without an active connection. That does not guarantee a first visit, reload or new browser session will work offline. This beta does not promise an installed offline application. Keep the current page open and save any file you need before leaving it.
